Prof. Dr. Karl J. J. Mayrhofer

Professorship for Electrocatalysis, Director of Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy

Head of ‘Electrocatalysis’ research department at HI ERN

  • Electrochemical reactions that occur at solid-liquid interfaces and are relevant to electrochemical energy conversion (fuel cells, water or CO2 electrolysers etc)
  • Reactions of interest include oxygen evolution, oxygen reduction, and carbon dioxide reduction
    • focus on finding active, selective and stable electrode materials for such reactions and subsequently integrating them into real systems
  • Development of innovative tools for on-line monitoring of electrochemical reactions by coupling sophisticated electrochemical cells (e.g. the scanning flow cell) with highly-sensitive analytical techniques like ICP-MS or QMS
